That is not the only one.
... mature and supported but costing $350 per year for a basic version....

The support and packaging costs $350. The actual software and code is all GPLed, meaning all of the code is freely obtainable. One can build a RHEL if he knows how, but don't expect RH to support or acknowledge it.

...RedMonk analyst James Governor said. "Right now Novell looks a little more open-source-focused."

It may look like that, but remember, RH totally believes in the open/free software idea, and releases all of it's code and products under GPL and LGPL type licenses. They are the one true company that is totally open-source in the GPL sense.

... to clone Unix, the software on which Linux is based.

Stallman wanted a totally free implemetation of Unix, not a clone of an already existing one. The statement gives the impression of saying something like "Apache is based on IIS". No, they are different implementations of one type of server. Linux is based on Minix and the Unix definition. Linux isn't based on AIX, SCO's OpenServer, BSD or even SysV. All these could be said to be based on "Unix". (Actually, I believe there has been legal cross pollenation in the last few years when IBM stepped in)
