I swear EVERY article I read, I see the supposed nonzealot responding with sarcastic, or caustic, zeal against linux and osx.
I just had to point it out at this point, not that anyone who reads these hasn't noticed... but there just seems to be the same little cadre of groupies posting their hearts out to bolster their emotional (or financial?) support of the Windows platform.
I use all the platforms, I develop for them, I support them and I support a wide array of servers. They -all- work, they -all- have their quirks, and they -all- have their strong points.
When someone has a huge budget, a Windows server farm is a fine choice. But, for the massive majority out there, a simple, cheap linux server is a beautiful option. If you're serving media, or, just like and feel comfy with it, OSX is a brutally good server.
Vista is a great step in a good direction in ways, and a giant pain in others. The marketing is too intense, the security is over hyped (but necessary!) and the applications/drivers that do not work with it yet are plentiful. The DRM lockdown in it is downright frightening. And it is unfair if MS to push it so fast at us without having a larger amount of thirdparty support ready. It is also rude and uncalled for that -some- thirdparty companies are refusing to support or update their drivers for 64bit or vista for existing hardware, trying to force you to buy new peripherals.
And for those of you who just LOVE to spout the stats about how many Windows boxes there are, and why -personal computing- companies should only devote their money&developing to Win32.. remember the VAST, VAST majority of your numbers include corporate or business machines... Re-calc those numbers (if you even can) for people using their machines for mostly personal or home business use. that "5-8%" changes drastically.
Keep that in mind, please, and pass it around to those many non-techies who make decisions based on flawed/popular "demographics".
Now, I must go back to work... which is what some of these posting-fanatics should maybe do.. unless.. this -is- their work...? - Posted by: wolftalamasca Posted on: 05/07/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
