The start of good practice at Microsoft - we hope
Microsoft's management had a notion of software where you through out the code (all of it) after 5 years. In other words management was into an illegitimate business model involving consumer rip off. Software never before Microsoft was ever viewed as consumable with a shelf life. To be fair, there was a notion that COBOL code became unworkable after 11 to 15 years of maintenance - spaghetti code - but not all of it would ever be abandoned. Hopper did good with COBOL.

Vista is a complete rewrite, a version 1.0 where one hopes that industry standards involving the basics like version control and refactoring are being used so that the code outlives the life of its developers just like other structures outlive the lives of their developers. Just like - gasp - all that COBOL code will outlive all of us.

Think how great Microsoft would be today if its code were a foundation like Linux is. Of course Microsoft management has just recently adopted and is promoting its flavor of Linux. It has also just acquired virtualization talent. The only thing really harming Microsoft is its culture. If Gooogle can make money being good and doing no harm so can Microsoft.

To bad the Yahoo purchase fell through today. Was it my suggestion that a condition of the purchase be removal of Brad Smith. Was it my suggestion that the cash hoard be used to fix Vista and old versions of windows so that they would work well on multi-processor multi-core PCs? Both are good remedies to antitrust violations.
