And what do you call all those lawsuits the RIAA files if not an attempt to stop sharing? The RIAA and the MPAA are indeed trying to stop ALL sharing, legal or not. As part of this issue, the RIAA is making a big deal about P2P software being used to distribute the material. Their angle is that if you kill P2P, the sources will dry up. This is not true.

Are you old enough to remember the days of the "plain brown wrapper?" When my dad got Playboy in the early 1960s, it came in a discreet brown envelope with a "clean" return address that hid the fact that it had *that* publication therein. The point is that long before the Internet, there were ways for people to put the cr@p out and blocking one minor distribution method won't stop it.
