Thanks for the Info
I will take a close look at the web sites you pointed me to.

I would like to voice my viewpoint on this MS/ Linux debate this one time. I taught myself programsing in Basic in 1985, I sold PC software from 1990-1996. I have developed as set of custom applications for a school office for the past 19 years. First in Dbase, then HyperCard(Macintosh), then Foxpro(Mac & Pc) and now in VB and MS Office. I doubt we well be going to .Net.

People complain about the hight price of MS Office. I remember selling Dbase, Lotus Spreadsheet and Word Perfect for $500 each. Could these programs talk to each other and share information in a single document? Did thse applications share a common macro language that could automate business tasks?

You may complain that Microsoft put many small companies out of business when they incorporteded the utilites those companies created into Windows or MS Office. It was something MS had to do. Now I do not have to re-buy an updated version of those utiltity/applications when Microsoft comes out with a new operating system or applicaitons.

I have used NT4 Server and now Windows 2000 Server in my office. I have had to reboot the server only once, and it is running 24/7. My office is a bunch of old ladies. They cannot handle any cmputer problems theselves. The computers and custom applications have to be working without any problems. The custom databse programs have to do everying they need with the push of a buttton.

The custom applications do payroll reporting for our teachers, customer handouts, inner office reports, contracts, invoices, keep track of hundres of classes a quarter. My latest project project is our web site. This web site has about 20 pages that need to change 4 times a year. www.piercecollege.edu/community/extension. VB to the rescue again. My newest little app will read the ACCESS database and create 20 web pages for me in about 7 minuets. (Complete with 'Jave' code to call my class description pop-up windows. (By the way I use HTMLpad instead of FrontPage or Dreamweaver.)

If Microsft software was crap I could not use it. If it broke down I could not handle the support calls I would be getting everday. If MS Office and VB were not easy and powerfull enough to create any appliction my office workers or I could think up and them implement in a painless way I would not be able to do my job alone and on a part time basis.

Now tell me how Linux and Java would make my job easier or my office workers happy if I switched.

I wish Linux and Java all the good fortune and happiness in the world. After all I am a hobbiest at heart and I love new and exciting things in the computer world.
