Plenty of ways to use Linux like this.
Uh, not really. The reason such stuff doesn't really exist for Linux is not that its a somewhat more secure system, but rather, that __a whole lot less idiots are using it__

If someone somehow got all the idiots running Linux, you'd see the same spyware all over linux, because these idiots would run any binary as root, just because it asked them, etc. I bet you'd hear excuses like "Well, THIS screensaver .rpm needed to be installed as root because it does THAT thing", etc.

The only answer to this problem is open source, but if you can't work a compiler, what ammo is there really to someone even distributing a GPL'd operating system including its own totally GPL'd spyware tools? Not much, really.

Then again, maybe someday bandwidth and CPU power will be so cheap, companies will give away set-top linux boxes with built-in spyware, just to capture the eyeballs. Like WebTV, but for the ghetto. Throw in a TV tuner card, and serve banner ads during the regular TV commercials, etc... And hey, as long as the source code is available, its all legit. Not only that, if the thing is burned solid in non-reflashable ROM, changing the binary after a recompile isn't even an issue!
