A history lesson
open source
The label "open source" as part of the "Open Source Initiative" was first used officially in 1998. However, the concept of open standards and open software has been around since TCP/IP. This was just the first time someone called it "open source". So whilst none of the following were invented by the Open Source Initiative, they are very much "open source".

TCP was first formally released in 1974 (though work on it started in the '60s). It was, right from the start, "open". Look at the PDF here:
http://student.ing-steen.se/IPv4/TCP-IP.pdf

"In the late 1960s the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, now called DARPA) ... began a partnership with U.S. universities and the corporate research community to design open, standard protocols and build multi-vendor networks".

That makes TCP/IP open right from the very start.

DNS
DNS was conceived in RFC 799 in 1981, written by Dr. David Mills. It was, right from the start, open. It was first controlled by the Stanford Research Institute in 1985. Ultimately the administration of domain names was taken over by ICANN (a not-for-profit organisation), but the actual design of DNS is utterly open.

HTTP
The first RFC for HTTP wan't until 1996, surprisingly. It was controlled right from the start by open standards. Tim Burners-Lee developed HTTP, HTML and the URL in 1991. It was published and open right from the start.
