WinFS and other nonsense
the functionality of a winfs can be READILY implemented
within a few weeks using a decent SQL server and Berkeley
Sockets.

It would be easy to implement a distributed search of text
files across a network and there is nothing magic to it. MS
apparently is trying to redefine the file system concept to
an overbloated cointrivance where each file contains
'methods' that can tell external apps about its contents. But
to do this, all apps which create files should also save other
meta-information within it relating to their 'meaning' so
that file can be searched according to appl. 'semantics'.

Since the mid 60's people have been developing DBMS
technology exactly for that purpose. RDMBS or OODBMS are
well established by now. People who have worked in
designing and developing databases know well how tedious
it is to design and maintain a usable DB.

Now mr gates wants to re-invent a WELL ESTABLISHED
tehnology and transform well-performing file system
tehnology to unwieldy bloats. All apps will have to be
rewritten in a way that the semanics of their files can be
described by those who create them and saved along with
the data in it.

This will EASILY prve to be a hopelessly useless endeavor. It
as if you are trying to learn to fly airplanes in order to drive
a bicycle with better aerodynamics.

You can do this but you need to have a lot of free time in
your hands.
