I take it that you missed his demo to a congressional committee.
In his demo of how quickly someone could download a movie (which took only a few minutes) he went on as to how easy it was to pirate content. Even with a DSL line (1.5M down/ 384k up) it takes about 4 hours to download an ISO9660 image (on a good day). Cable has a potential bandwidth of about 10M but is shared bandwidth with all the users on the circuit. A full T-1 circuit is 1.5MB/s, a T-3 circuit is 45MB/s and an E-1 (European equivalent) is roughly 2MB/s. A DVD is roughly 4.9GB, so it might take a while to bring down the image. While all this technical data on bandwidth may not appear to be too interesting, these are details that he does not know about!

Hollywood/MPAA has another tool that he does not know about (apparently) which is DRM. VoD providers (these days, mostly just the adult entertainment industry) use things like DRM and watermarking as well as pay per minute streaming video with data encryption.

Expect to hear more noise from Jack when everything converts to TCP/IP or XCP/IP and all binary. This is happenning with the FCC among other committees in Congress and the broadcast/media induatry. I think the last meeting on that was 5/12/2004, but don't recall for sure...
