Just a motif, look past it

Debian's releases are named after characters in "Toy Story." Ubuntu's are named after wild animals, with random alliterative adjectives. It's part of their South African motif.

When the Murdocks announced in '94 they were gonna do the highest quality GNU/Linux distro ever (Debian), I didn't believe it. Yeah, right, everybody says best distro ever, yadda yadda. And they did it. I scoffed when Shuttleworth said he was gonna make a Debian-derivative end-user friendly (Xandros did that already, but it's commercial) and keep it truly free. But they're doing it. I'm putting new customers on Ubuntu, silly names or not.
