Not so new.
Microsoft started supporting standards-compliant browser engines such as Gecko (Firefox) in ASP.NET 2.0. Prior to that, all non-IE browsers (and IE prior to 5.0 or maybe 4.0, as well as all Mac IE, IIRC) were considered “downlevel” and would render slower and lower-quality versions of ASP.NET 1.x web pages unless the hosting site had a special BrowserCaps file installed, and even then there were limitations.

No more. If your ASP.NET 1.1 site’s hosting service upgrades to ASP.NET 2.0, and runs your site under 2.0 using its nearly perfect backwards compatibility with 1.x, that alone will make your site work properly and more fully with non-Trident (Win IE) browsers including Gecko, WebKit (Safari), and Presto (Opera).

And ASP.NET 2.0 has been out for how long, now?
