Typing is easier

Some of my customers are willing to get a shell (let's quit calling it a "command line," shall we?) and paste a line of text from an email into it. I can ask them to send me a complete list of the software packages on their system.

COLUMNS=180 dpkg -l | mailx -s packagelist me@example.net

Others have been led to believe selecting and pasting a line of text from an email into an xterm will forever be beyond their abilities. I spend tedious, expensive hours with them on the phone trying to get them to maneuver through a maze of dialogs and pulldown menus.

The person who tells you "you don't need to know that" is not your friend. He just wants to control you and take your money.
