With every copy of Virtual PC, MS sells another copy of Windows. Every Mac running VPC is a chance to sell more Windows software.
I can't see that MS loses anything by supporting VPC.
The orignial idea of Virtual PC was to emulate the actual IBM PC clone hardware, not Windows. You could run any i386 OS on a Mac, including Linux, NeXTstep, etc. Though why you would run Linux on a PC emulator when native Mac versions were available I don't know.
I bought VPC 2 and ran Windows 95 and 98 on it - it was OK but a better solution was to buy a cheap PC to run Windows.
By bundling Windows with VPC, MS are ensuring an extra few percentage points of market penetration.
I'd like to understand the relationship between VPC and Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection for Mac. Seems the best solution is to run Windows on a Windows box and use RDC to effectively run Windows applications on your Mac - Xwindows for Windows?
