Pragmatism is the keyword
As far as I read that was a biology area, not a computer science one, so, maybe they thought a windows server (in this case a 14 node cluster) would be easier to install and to maintain than a linux one, and if we take out the reliability issue, that is out of the scope of this post, that could be true. Microsoft has a tech support infrastructure that undoubtely will surpass the one the linux community can provide, given that the linux forums, although complete, are for the people with certain expertise in computer knowledge. Do not let ourselves be consumed by our emotions in this kind of discussions, it helps no one.
