Probably don't want to lose the investment
Once you get the "bean-counters" to approve a purchase it isn't easy to talk them into throwing away existing software to get something new. I don't think linux Matlab is GPL licensed.

Yes his student's are there for learning but that doesn't mean they are there for learning a new OS. Sometimes you just need to get a job done and you go with what people know.

Most project management gurus will tell you that it is very risky to do a technology switch on a project.

In most businesses to be competitive you need to get the job done the fastest and most efficient way possible. Zealotry has no place. You choose based on what is best for the company.
