- How about role based pricing?

How about role based pricing? All MS would have to do is sell the CDs with only the individual role codes on them, (there would be bundles too like you get with Office - you pay the most for all roles on the CD, you pay less for a few roles, and you pay even less for only one role.) Because it would be pricy for a small or small-medium sized business I think to have to buy multiple copies of windows server to have multiple servers that split the roles. Although I guess it could be argued that if you can afford multiple hardware servers you can afford multiple Windows Server OS's. (Unless you use your old hardware for the less demanding roles and new hardware for the more demanding roles.)
Role based is a good idea either way as you don't use up all your system partition / drives as windows updates come in over the years, which is the case on one of my windows 2003 servers now. From now on I'll probably just have one C: partition because of this problem that even with a 20 gig partition the C: partition still fills up (and I often wonder if some of the MS Updates' purpose is exactly this - to force you to get a new server and hence a new OS.)
I have had no trouble with windows 2003 server. Nor with XP for that matter. I didn't have much trouble with 2000 for that matter, although there were a few odd problems. As far as serving web pages 2003 server is on the same par as Red Hat Linux in my opinion. And I don't have to hire any consultants with Windows server since I am able to figure it all out myself, whereas I've never bothered to learn Linux to the expert level yet.
However - what MS really needs IMHO is new top executives. Nothing personal against Gates and Balmer as human beings - they'd make fine neighbors. But I think they have operated Microsoft as a business bully, and the badwill from years of operating as sharks obviously has cut into their stock price which isn't incredibly high. I think they need to clean house at the top, install a new corporate culture, to generate goodwill rather than badwill, and I think you'd see their profits and stock prise rise. - Posted by: bearlyworking Posted on: 04/09/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
