Improper example
Your wiring example is a poor choice. In wiring standards, if you use a superior quality wire in the project than the minimum required by the standard, you are still following the standards. A better example would be if the TCP/IP protocol specification that ensures all computers properly interpret messages they receive had instead been drafted in such a way that many parts were left to the imagination of those implementing the applications. Then you would only be able to communicate with other computers whose software was written by the same company (or possibly the same person).
