You obviously understand the product technically fairly well. That is good, and you are very right in that it is far from perfect - and definately not the greatest.

However, I have taken a look at Microsoft's P&L financials recently and the server business unit doesn't seem to be suffering the woes that you mention.

Seems to me like Microsoft is growing - not dying.

Just because a product is technically superior doesn't make it a winner in the market. It takes A+ marketing to make that happen. Marketing not being just advertising but the entire concept to market process. This is where open source software is lacking to Microsoft - and why Microsoft will not die the death you speak of anytime soon.
