You are saying that in order to compete with Microsoft they have to enter a market in which Microsoft itself doesn't compete?

That makes even less sense. You can't take market share from Microsoft as a service company - because what services of Microsoft are you stealing market share from? None. Microsoft is a software company. You won't be competing with them on software - but you will be in an entirely different market all together because you are now in services.

So if they want to get into the service market, which I don't see why, it is because they simply aren't competitive enough in the market the company currently has the majority of their assets in?
