Why would you want to?
From a business perspective I just don't understand the hype in switching software companies from software to service companies. Service based companies have much more overhead, are much harder to differentiate from their competitors, and have to make a great first impression.

Oh, and since when is clout defined by code contribution? No, sorry, this may gain them clout among developers who like to work hard to produce software that makes very little money, but not among the true industry - the customers.

When it comes to services we must look back at the proven four I's -

Intangibility
Inconsistency
Inseparability
Inventory/Idle Production Capacity

You see, when these four things are mastered that is what counts - to the customers. And the customers are what defines any company - not industry 'clout'. But these four are very hard to master and I don't see where the justification is to move to a model that demands this. It only makes sense to all the computer users out there who want to free load off of us developers and not pay for any software.

But I do wish them the best of luck. Just wish they would do their real job and worry about the only thing any business should - providing maximum value to their shareholders. Isn't that the single purpose of any company?

Sincerely,
Nathan Neitzke
