- They sell the services, not the software.
-
One reason that has been floated out there that
Linux will not catch on is that there for free
software there is no one to call when there is a
problem. That's where service companies like SuSE
(now Novell) and Red Hat come in. For a fee, they
WILL take responsibility for a problem. They'd
have to be much more willing to take
responsibility than MS would be willing to take,
especially if they expect to be able to compete
with MS. The willingness to accept responsibility
will appeal to many an IT department.
And the ones who contribute the most code have
the most clout in the industry, because it only
makes sense that the ones who contributed the
code will know the most about it. They will be
able to FIX bugs. Quickly. So that's why you'll
be seeing a lot of one-ups-manship (sp?) between
Novell and Red Hat, because the one who
contributes the most code will be the ones seen
by the public as the most knowledgable, and hence
the better service company. - Posted by: Michael Kelly Posted on: 05/11/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
