I doubt it was lack of sales which made the decision. KDE isn't that far away from releasing their own plugin for Exchange for KMail, and that will be GPL when released. So if anything, Ximian proabably decided the timing was good to release it as GPL now rather than have everybody jump to KDE's mail program later.

This way they are promoting a cheaper desktop sooner rather than later (one of their goals) and they can say with some truth that they came out with a GPL Exchange plug-in first (and thus have more expertise with it, which is an important selling tool when selling services for GPL software).
