While I agree with most of your post, I would like to put a stop to all this business about game playing on computers and its use to get at Linux and Apple.
Yes there is some but It is a tiny percentage of people who still play on a PC.
Linux/Apple game players will use an xbox or Playstation to enjoy games just as most PC users do.
Linux and Apple are just as good at basic computing as windows.
Yes there is a learning curve but for the young kids of today it is nothing more than a hickup.
I have kids that prove my point.They started on Linux and have adapted so easily that they are more skilled than I in its use.
I am one of those general public you mention.
The ones who have the will but not the brains to master an alternative to Windows.
I agree that Linux needs better hardware support, especially home networking and drivers but once its working its great.
I wish it was plug and play just like Windows but its not so I am still an old dog learning new tricks.
