Back in the early 1980s the company I worked for had terminals in its offices which had no storage of there own, and barely enough built-in smarts to communicate with the main "server" (if you could call it that, an IBM mainfram, actually), via a "cluster controller" and modem. Some of the cluster controllers I saw had 8 inch disks, which were presumably the predecessors of the 5.25" disks common on early MS-DOS and Windows machines. Those were the days!
