if you take the numbers of PC's reported to be sold and multiply it by the $50 OEM Windows price (I used $100 but you use what you want) you come up about $30 Billion short in revenue. So, either they are cooking the books somehow, or they are getting far more revenue off of Apps and server sales than they are off client sales (I came up with about $3 Billion in desktop OS revenues).

So, for all the bad will, legal trouble, and quality problems they create spreading themselves too thin its only a matter of time before the major investors do what you say - force them to focus on the money rather than the religion!
