On Mac Office
I?ve always read that MS makes money on Mac Office. Unlike
the Windows version, you can?t buy it preinstalled on a
computer for 50 or 100 bucks. You have to pay the full 400
or whatever it is. The Mac version also leaves out the
database element ? instead giving Excel the ability to read
write Filemaker. That has to save MS some money.

MS also faces the monopoly question. Without Office, a lot
of Mac?s customers would disappear. There is no other
comparable office suite available for the Mac. Open Office is
not native to OSX, requiring X11 to run. It?s not as efficient
and does not utilize Quartz.

If MS were to drop Office for Mac, it might raise a lot of
eyebrows in Washington. MS cannot count on an
administration as friendly to it as the Bush one is in the
future. Heck, Al Gore is on the Apple board. It stands to
reason that MS should continue Mac Office, both for the
profits and to avoid future nastiness with the DOJ.
