I'm not sure what's to be learned...
...from the Apple example. My impression is that MS has always regarded Apple as something of a charity case. If I recall accurately, MS agreed to port MSOffice to Apple and give Apple $150M to settle a suit by Apple against MS to the effect that MS Windows "look and feel" infringed on Apple's.

Also, MS is somehow dealing with its own Office support issues that derive from the various versions of Office and Windows on which they run. On the other hand, I have no trustworthy information regarding how well StarOffice, for example, runs across various Linux and Unix distros or how well Sun is able to support it. At least StarOffice is a precedent for a notional multi-OS MSOffice, however.

MS' arguments that porting some app to a non-Windows OS is infeasible seem always given the lie by other vendors whose products run on multiple OSs.

With regard to the GPL, I don't see any necessity for proprietary apps written to run in Linux to be released via the GPL. I'm fairly sure that Oracle and DB2 aren't released under the GPL. I haven't heard of any great pressure on Oracle or IBM to GPL these products.

So, I'm still left wondering why MS insists on shoving Windows down our throats so we can run MS apps. Is it supposed to be clear to everyone that Windows is a superior OS?
