The way I see it is:
The GPL insures that code I place under the GPL remains free for all to use and prevents its inclusion in proprietary software.

I see nothing that prohibits the use of MY code in any profit making endeavor. Those who do use it are however required to allow anyone else to also use it, and if they make improvements to MY code, they are reuired as payment for the use of MY code to give these improvements to all others who use MY code.

They are quite free to write their own code to accomplish the same objective which code they may then prohibit others from using. The biggest problem that I see is that the U. S. Patent Office has granted patents for writings (I can't recall the exact date of case and number, but quite a while ago U. S. courts held that software was "written" in a language and therefore was subject to copyright.) which should be properly copyrighted.
