If you DL OpenOffice, you get to keep it and install it wherever you can.

If you buy MS apps, going forward (or if you download music on iTunes, for that matter), you are only renting.

Sure, there are still plenty of vendors selling software that you "own" in the old sense; but I think they'll evaporate as Microsoft et al (including IBM) refine the rental model.

That's why it's so important to preserve some of the independence of OSS. E.g., important projects like Mozilla, the Linux kernel, and Apache, need to have as much real independence from corporate influence as is feasible.
