TCO is an issue
They can sell this at a very low TCO to shops that want/need a simple solution for cube-farms full of low-level employees -- say, a big boiler-room full of sales reps who need to run client-server apps, type the occasional memo, and logon to SalesForce.com to run their contact lists.

True, but think how many of those there are! I am sure the number is in the millions in the US alone. Imagine the impact if Microsoft's install base shrank by that much. If you consider what it takes to administer Windows boxes, what with all the patching and rebooting, why would anyone want to do that if they perceived that there were a decent alternative that would be compatible (on a file-exchange basis at the least) with everybody else. After all, that is the main justification for purchasing and upgrading MS Office anyway.

Whether IBM can successfully market this or not remains to be seen (can you spell "OS/2"? I thought you could...) but the idea itself certainly seems sound where applicable.
