Agreed (sort of), but you'll have to fight to keep it
If the only options available to you are renting or nothing, you'll rent.

Whatever anyone's feelings about Open Source, one thing remains true: It's the only area, presently, where we can be assured of something like "ownership". For that reason alone, it needs to be fostered from the ground up.

OSS is not a panacea, though. To the extent that it is primarily funded and driven by entities like IBM/Lotus and Novell (as sometimes seems to be the case, these days), it will shift away from models that are friendly to individuals.

The shift will be subtle; look to the new Red Hat Desktop for an example. They dumped the Red Hat Linux distro (now "Fedora") because it did not meet their needs; it's been replaced with the radically simpler, more corporate-friendly Red Hat Desktop, which would be an ideal platform for this kind of solution. (Cheap, small, and IN CONTROL.)

Always remember: The same technological advances that can set us free, can be used to keep us in thrall.
