Maybe the US is an emerging market...
A market requiring intensive education and promotion--not to mention bribery of elected officials--in order to meet or sustain sales goals could be considered "emerging". In this sense, MS is faced with a continuously emerging market in the US, as waves of young people enter the ranks of workers and consumers, as MS tries to convince us to stop using our old software and buy licenses to their latest releases, and as the cost of running political campaigns continues to skyrocket.

Since the US is impoverishing itself through various often-discussed means, we will also increasingly resemble "emerging" markets in the third world. MS' marketing strategy developed for Thailand might soon be applicable here--at least the price dropping aspect of it. Perhaps also MS will open a R&D center in Detroit, Baltimore, East St Louis or other decaying US city in order to persuade state and local governments to offer low-cost computers to their citizens, whose abilities to purchase any new consumer goods--much less new computers and software--are in decline.

Lastly, MS will regard the US as an emerging market because before long the English language, in messages posted to this site, will have fallen into disuse.
