I'd look at this from a different angle
---A Microsoft goal is to minimize the amount of expertise
necessary to use its products. Their success at meeting this
requirement is the reason Windows is on 95% of desktops---

See, I think they're smarter than this, and have gone at it from a
different angle. What they've managed to do (intentionally or
not), is to lower people's expectations about how well a
computer should work, or how easy it should be to maintain. As
you said, Windows is considered "acceptable", at least in
comparison with past generations. Are these things really
acceptable? Or is it just a little better than the really awful stuff
that came before it? If people had experience using a seamless,
reliable and secure OS like OSX, would they be as willing to
accept the constant patching and infection cycle that seems to
hit Windows weekly?

Would we accept this level of maintenance and failure in any
other consumer product? The only one I can think of that comes
close is cel phones, with their poor reception and dropped calls.
