Much, much more to the point: Microsoft's whole business depends on having no competition. If they don't head off possible challengers in (for instance) China, those challengers will have a chance to build up a critical mass of installed base and applications which continue to reinforce each other.

Next thing you know, MS will have to cut margins to retain market share or even give up market share in core markets such as North America and Europe. At that point, their reputation for invincibility goes *poof* and the whole process accelerates.

No, Microsoft is in the unenviable position of Pharaoh and Herod: kill them all in their cradles to make sure none of them survive to adulthood.
