Since when?
Listen, go out and purchase a copy of Windows 2000 or 2003 server. Now, if you have three servers you need to install, you need three copies. That's $750 for the OEM "Server" version of Windows 2000/2003.

Now, do the same with NetWare 6 or 6.5 - you pay $1,500 for the software but can install it on as many servers as you want - unlimited.

Now, to compare apples to apples, you have to purchase the "Advanced Server" version of Windows to get the same functionality that NetWare provides (failover, load balancing, etc.) - to really be equal, you'd have to get "Data Center" version to ge the same multi-processor scaling NetWare provides (up to 32 processors). Well, the "Advanced Server" version of Windows is something like $3,000 a pop. I understand the "Data Center" version is more along the lines of $25,000 a pop and not supported directly by Microsoft.

So, is $3,000 per server a lower vs. $1,500 for unlimited servers a better deal?

Only in Redmond...
