Good Theory
It would probably require a significant erosion of Microsoft's
market share before a Novel release. Having said that, it
seems that ducks are lining up and there is a consolidation
of support in the Linux camp. On Microsofts current viral
timeline we can expect around 4 major security exploits
prior to Loghorn's release. Folks are fed up with lock-in and
paranoia and may want to fold in diversity. If .Net
functionality is rolled out by someone other than MS prior
to Longhorn - it becomes Microsoft's obligation to play well
with others. Antitrust is keeping them on a shorter leash
currently and flipping some API to torpedo Open .Net would
not play well. Look also to Apple to do much more than act
as a spoiler. It is a prime example of a polished Unix
derivative desktop and is another advertisement for things
non-Microsoft.
