My theory
A couple months ago, Novell aquires Ximian, the
company that started Mono, the open source
version of .NET, and the open source Outlook
clone Evolution. Now they get a Linux distibution
which makes what I consider the best desktop
version of Linux and also makes OpenExchange, an
open source server which does everything MS
Exchange does. Put that together, then consider
what Microsoft is doing these days with .NET and
Longhorn, and the fact that Longhorn won't be
gold for another two years at even the optimist's
estimates. My theory is that Novell is not only
trying to clone what MS is doing at both the
server end and client end, but they are trying to
beat them out of the gate by releasing their
product before Microsoft releases Longhorn.

Well, if the .NET method is the direction the
industry is going, then I sure as hell don't want
MS to be the only player in town. If Mono can
truly clone what .NET runtimes do for Windows,
then once and for all we can have true platform
independance.

I know for a fact my company's software vendor is
already planning a .NET version of its software.
If Novell can provide a .NET platform on Linux,
then FINALLY my company (and it's a small
one) can consider Linux as a viable option in its
future. And everyone knows two options are a heck
of a lot better than just one.
