Good Points...
1. You are correct, I don't store digital photos or movies on my hard drive. The photos I back up on to disk and take them off the hard drive. I don't watch movies at my computer. So users who like to watch movies at their computer and keep all of their files on the hard and never back them up may like this. (I would not recommend keeping a lifetime of photos on your hard drive but that's me.)

2. Actually yes, it does not take much hardware to surf and do email. Most cell phones can do this now. So Longhorn is overkill if that is all you want to do. There is a large market out there where that is all that they do. I am not a user who thinks everything can be done with a 486. I just happen to be someone advocating the right tool for the right job.

3. You would be correct that the general public will buy whatever Microsoft sells. Even if Apple can do most of the things Longhorn will do already. But, there are still a lot of systems out there running windows 98, ME, and 2000. In fact MS just extended its support for 98. The consumers yawned in comparison to the hype around 95 and 98. Consider that Longhorn will not be out for another two years, Microsoft is taking big risk in the consumer market.

4. This is an observaton, but PC sales will start to dwindle and smaller platforms will take its place on cell phones, laptops, and maybe something we have yet to see. Apple and more to a greater extent Linux is positioning itself in this market where MS has only had lukewarm success. The future is not in PC sales but in smaller electronic devices. While building Longhorn to be the next big thing on a PC, that market may start to slip from under them.

5. I think Longhorn will be a success in the Enterprise. Coupling Longhorn with .Net should help keep Linux at bay. We'll have to see how Linux responds to Longhorn's threat to them in the Enterprise. I see Longhorn as a success in the business market, but maybe not in the consumer market.
