I haven't really noticed that
Actually I've noticed the exact opposite.

For example my VCR was the hardware unit for recording TV shows for time shifting purposes. Then along came the TIVO a hardware device. Now you have software being Microsoft Media Center Edition and MYTH TV for Linux. Both software solutions.
