You obviously don't know what most people do on a computer
The vast majority of people that use computers peform very few tasks on them. They know virtally nothing about computers and much of what they learn is forgotten for lack of doing.

I have built and/or upgraded a few hundred computers in the last couple of years. All of these are win98 machines, with a few dual or triple boot systems. These were mostly for people who got new computers with XP preinstalled and wanted their win98 back. I am retired and don't need additional income, so I only charge for any cost I incur.

Early on, the majority of these people I helped were seniors. Many of their sons and daughters as well as other referrals have made this a pretty good mix of age groups. I have setup networks in homes, offices and a couple of churches.

The vast majority of the people I have worked with do three things on their computer on a regular basis.
1. All but a few do email
2. Most do some web browsing
3. Most do word processing-mostly through email
Other tasks performed by a small percentage of the people include greeting cards, online banking, pictures from cameras, playing and/or writing media and so on.

XP is and extreme overkill for most computer users I work with. Most of these people have neither the desire or the help needed to learn anything but the very basics of a computer. A good analagy would be the statement: "I have no idea how to progam my vcr. The clock is still flashing after two years".

You made this statement "I don't find it the slightest bit limiting. Nor am I forced to go where MS wants me to. I can go to any web site I choose to visit". And so can most halfway sophisticated pc users. That does not include the vast majority of users out there. This fact is what MS has always counted on and what keeps their monopoly in place. Do you think that if most computer users were as knowledgeable as you, that MS could have gotten away with all the things they did for so long?
