I don't agree
A few years ago, you would have been correct, most people didn't buy upgrades, they just got a new computer. But, consumers have become wiser and don't just buy a new computer if they don't need to. Most consumers have either a P3 or P4 which does everything they need. And many of them are getting their computers fixed when they go bad, not just replacing them.

The problem Microsoft is going to have, IMHO, is consumer education. Consumers are realizing that they don't need the latest and greatest equipment to send email, surf the internet, or play most games. Computers are a commodity market. Their hayday is past. Now, we get marginal increases in speed but they are not really necessary. From the 386 to the Penium II, we saw some major increases. From the Pentium II to the P4, they have been so-so. Yes, the speed is nice - especially with video processing, but my daughter's P2 does everything she needs and most of the stuff my P4 will do.

I have racked my brain to figure out what the compelling reason to upgrade might be, and I don't see it. If you have one, I would be glad to hear it.
