You're correct! If you don't have a Linux book/ software box on the bookshelf behind you, or a Linux whitepaper on your desk when negotiating with Microsoft, then you are losing money.

Even though Microsoft is predominant, even the thought that they can be replaced is a powerful tool to be used on their sales people.

Microsoft, originally, used to come in as cheaper than its competitors. The competitors, IBM, Lotus, etc would use ROI arguments, but Microsoft would say "but look, we're cheaper". Yes, then it gets more expensive, and difficult to change later.

Nowadays, Open Source OS's and applications are coming in to businesses "as cheaper". This is Microsoft's own turf. Their sales managers are not used to this! Microsoft are now using the ROI argument, that used to be used against them many years ago. So to get the best out of your next Microsoft deal, play the Linux card. Even set up a Linux server to do some document management or file serving or anything, AND TELL the MS Rep.

That way you get 2 things: a lot better deal from Microsoft: and maybe a cheap file server, or whatever.
