Its a transition ...
We are almost ten years beyond the DOJ findings and a lot of water has gone under the bridge since that document was published. In the mean time MS has been under ever increasing regulatory pressure internationally and Linux is advancing technologically in spite of efforts, overt and covert to stymie that advance. But now, finally, a niche of hot competition is emerging. If you followed my links, you will note a pattern. Linux is ONLY competitive with Windows in certain narrow niches, namely corporate and governmental environments. This is because ONLY these users have the money and power to drive the changes necessary to transition from Windows to Linux. The fact is, in the consumer market, where customers have little leverage in terms of getting applications ported to Linux OR in terms of negotiating purchasing or use term with Microsoft, there is STILL nearly zero competition and Microsoft STILL holds a nearly total monopoly. But Microsoft as a corporation IS changing and changing for the better. But much of that change, unfortunately, is having to be forced on them by those few customers with the power to force those changes due to the mass purchasing capability and ability to guide governmental regulation. So, in the end, both statements are true. Microsoft is finally facing competition in areas that they previously held a near total monopoly, AND there are still areas of the marketplace where they STILL hold a near total monopoly. It is most certainly true that "one can't have it both ways". But when you start to narrow the scope of your analysis, you begin to see that the picture is more complex than just a global overview would indicate.
