PDF is a container format, like eps, that stores various
objects in one <ocument. It's used so heavily in print
becuase it retains text properly, something that most
other formats cannot do.

Let's say you have a photoshop pic and you add some
text over it in photoshop (that would automatically
create a new text layer). When you export the pdf from
photoshop (as long as you don't flatten it first) the text
is retained in the pdf as text rather than being
bitmapped and thus becoming fuzzy. If yu were also to
add a vector object in Photoshop, that vector would also
be retained in the pdf - thus keeping its edges clean
and sharp as opposed to the fuzziness that rasterizing
would create.

The above is important because commercial printing
runs photos at 300 dpi. 300 dpi is horrible for text
which is generally rasterized for final output on the RIP
at 2400 dpi. A "press" quality pdf provices that result
while creating a rather small package - MB wise.
