PNG not so great
Remember - PNG is not the be-all-end-all image format. It's compression is not that great. It's big advantage is that it's non-proprietary.

If Microsoft is REALLY serious about creating a true and completely open specification for a new format, 1) I'll be very surprised as it is against their nature, and 2) I'll welcome it.

People are really wary about this because of the past problems with GIF and Jpeg patents, where YEARS after wide adoption the companies with the patents started going after people. We need changes to patent law to be more in line with trademarks - once something is in wide use for a number of years, you lose your patent protection.
