This is a future legal manipulation tactic
I cannot see any other reason than for Microsoft to use the
idiocyncrasies of the patent process in future legal cases.

Imagine, someone sues Microsoft for patent infringement and
Microsoft's defense is that the software they used is nothing
more than the nature evolution of the industry and see, the
patent office is so stupid, they even let us patent a tree, which is
a part of the natural evolution of the apple tree. Using an apple
tree is just part of the irony.

Microsoft does nothing for fun. I am certain this will be used to
challenge the whole patent process later when they want to
defend themselves for ripping off another company's IP again.
