I like Apple's approach
Apple has taken a very aggressive approach to developing OS X
and each major upgrade comes with a cost to help pay for that
development. Remember, we are talking about little old Apple
with about 3% market share who, in addition to major releases of
OS X on about an annual basis, also provides free updates
throughout the year. They are also aggressive in other areas,
like iPods, TMS, G5 computers (when IBM works out the fab
problems), iLife and a large selection of very good pro apps. All
from a "3% company".

Like the previous upgrades, Tiger will probably have a lot of new
features, many of which were requested by users or developers.
In addition, there will probably be a speed increase as this is one
of Steve Jobs prime objectives. There will also be a thing or two
that will drive Bill Gates nuts.

I've had a PowerBook for a little over 2 years (and just got a new
one Monday) and purchased both Jag & Panther when they came
out. When Tiger comes out my price will move from $129 to
$199 because we now have 4 Macs in the family. Each time I
spend the money I believe I get good value and that leaves me
ready for next year's purchase.

For those that don't want to spend the money, be happy with
what you have.

On a side note, I was talking to an IT guy at a medical equipment
company and he said that they still had to support Windows 3.1.
