OSX updates make sense to me
Apple added X11 and then KDE functionality, which makes a big difference in terms of what you can run.
I can't remember what the differences were between 10.0 and 10.1, but I remember it was significant enough for me to buy it.
There were then free upgrades to 10.1.7.

These are the purchasing decisions people make: is ProductX worth $100. Look at features, make decision. In the case of Apple, people have been buying OSX updates.

One of the things Apple really take care of is sheer beauty (including simple beauty of user interface).

I think the Apple upgrades (and the way they are sold) makes sense compared to say Microsoft Licencing 6.0 where people bought a whole lot of nothing.

The other model, eg: Mandrake annual subscription makes a lot of sense, because there are numerous updates that do come through in the year. They are cutting edge and also don't break the system, and therefore have an advantage over the free Debian apt-get system (the whole apt-get system is getting better however).

I'd like to see a Knoppix variant built entirely on stable debian packages, and with updates therefore restricted to stable packages.

It's certainly an interesting world out there at the moment!
