You're right
Why they update software I'll never know. Illustrator 88 worked terrific. Who needs all those fancy effects. Does anyone really need an interface in color? Black and white palettes are plenty clear.

In the old days, we drew our own 3D perspectives, and we liked it. If we needed a line, we used border tape. We sure as heck don't need no fancy HTML editor. Anyone who knows what they're doing uses Notepad anyway. Colorized syntax is overrated. As for InDesign, you wouldn't need to import multiple pages if you did them right in the first place.

It's pretty clear that by releasing one of these "updates" every two years or so they are just trying to milk their user base and keep programmers employed in some kind of leftist liberal work project.

I don't see why I shouldn't receive it free. After all, I paid $50 for an OEM version of Photoshop back in 1994. As for Universal Binary support, who in their right mind uses an Intel processor? I don't trust 'em! It's probably a sinister conspiracy by Microsoft to destroy the Mac. Those Intel chips have XP cooties.

Surely there's some free open source suite that's just as good, for Linux.
