No, it is not a far leap. The simple question of 'Is this data accurate?' appears to be a pretty solid 'No.'.
Yes, MS's market is growing as more household aquire PCs. You are correct, and that fact CAN be accurately shown. (Not that I remember that being of any relevence to this conversation.)

Stating that "Google's stats merely reflect use. 1% of the users use Linus." is almost true. In all actuality, it reflects 'use' the way Google *calculates* it. This calculation is inaccurate.

Side Note: Most people don't "use Linus". Maybe a woman has in the past, I'm not sure. But he seems to be too smart for that.
